“How would your previous manager describe you?”
This is a proxy for a reference check. Interviewers want to understand how you're perceived, whether you have self-awareness, and whether your self-assessment matches external feedback.
3 qualities + proof for each. Pick qualities that align with the role and that you're confident your manager would actually say.
Pick 3 qualities you're confident your manager would say, and back each one with a brief example.
Example: 'My last manager would describe me as someone she could trust to own things end-to-end. She actually said as much when she gave me our highest-priority enterprise account — she told me: 'I give this to you because you handle the unexpected well.'
She'd also say I'm someone who elevates the people around me. I spent a lot of time mentoring two junior team members, and both of them got promoted last cycle.
And honestly, she'd probably say I'm someone who needs clear goals to do my best work — I function better with defined outcomes than open-ended ambiguity. She'd say it as a positive framing because she knows I always clarify before I build.'
